By now, we've all heard about our BMI, or Body Mass Index, and how it is supposed to indicate
whether we are overweight or not. The BMI is a height and weight formula that doctors use to indicate whether someone is overweight or not. Researchers are finally recognizing that the BMI number is not the most important indicator of fitness or obesity. What is most important is where your body fat is and what kind of fat it is that is really important.
For years, many women have struggled with having a high BMI that said they were obese, while they exercised, ate right and were in great shape. At the same time, slender girls with a low BMI could have a lot of fat around their stomachs, not exercise at all, and have bad health habits. Their low BMI said they were in better shape than the heavier girls, but now the scientists say that is simply not true.
Having fat around your stomach, hidden in the deep layers of your abdomen, is one of the most dangerous kinds of fat to have. Called visceral fat, it is often hidden by those with a slender figure. This kind of fat produces three times the dangerous chemicals of other fats like the fat on your thighs and butt. Those chemicals drain directly into the liver. Visceral fat, or fat around your middle, signals a higher risk of heart disease and diabetes. This kind of fat is also dangerous because it sneaks up on you, replacing muscle with fat as we age, and it is much harder to get rid of the older we get.
So, if you are a gal with a high BMI but you know you're in good shape, exercise, eat well and take care of yourself, good for you.
Don't worry about your BMI as much as you have in the past. I
f you are a more slender girl with a low BMI but you know you are putting on fat around your waist, take steps now to reduce it. Don't relax just because your BMI is low. Don't congratulate yourself because you have slender legs and hips, a small butt, and only have to fight a poochy tummy. That tummy needs to be taken care of, pronto, so get to work on it now, because it will be harder to take off later.
